BD Biosciences offers a portfolio of immunoassay products for the accurate quantitation and detection of a variety of soluble and intracellular proteins, including cytokines, chemokines, growth factors and phosphorylated cell signaling proteins.
The BD Cytometric Bead Array (CBA) platform is designed to analyze as many as 30 proteins in just 25 to 50µL of sample. The CBA system uses antibody-coated beads and the fluorescence detection of flow cytometry to efficiently capture analytes. Beads with unique fluorescence intensities can be mixed and used simultaneously in a single tube. BD CBA kits are preconfigured for consistent results for routine panels; BD CBA Flex Sets allow researchers to build customized multiplex panels.
The BD Cytometric Bead Array Enhanced Sensitivity Flex Set system provides a new level of detection compared to other multiplex assay systems.
Most bead assays can detect cytokine levels of 5 to 10 pg/mL. BD Enhanced Sensitivity Flex Set assays can detect levels as low as 0.274 pg/mL, an improvement of more than 35-fold. The CBA system provides a reliable, flexible method for quantitative detection of multiple proteins in a single serum, plasma or tissue culture supernatant sample. BD CBA Enhanced Sensitivity Flex Sets can detect levels of <1 pg/mL of cytokine.

The balance between cell growth and death (apoptosis) is important for both development and normal tissue homeostasis. Several methods have been developed to assess apoptosis, cell cycle and cell proliferation; and multicolor flow cytometry and fluorescent microscopy have become essential in these studies. Changes in the plasma membrane of living cells are key characteristics of the apoptotic process. One indicator of apoptosis is the presence of phosphatidylserine (PS), which is normally located on the cytoplasmic face of plasma membranes. During apoptosis, PS moves to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane and can be detected using flow cytometry when bound to fluorochrome-labeled Annexin V.
BD Biosciences carries a series of antibodies and kits designed for the detection of proliferating cells by measurement of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), an analog of the DNA precursor thymidine used to measure de novo DNA synthesis. During the S phase of the cell cycle (DNA synthesis), BrdU is incorporated into the newly synthesized DNA and can be readily detected by anti-BrdU specific antibodies.
